WORLD FOOD PRESERVATION EDUCATION FOUNDATION |
Studies by the UN FAO and the World Bank conclude that one-third of food produced worldwide is lost between the time it is harvested and consumed. Developing countries often lose over 50% of their harvested crop before it is consumed.
The World Food Preservation Education Foundation is a non-profit (c) (3) charitable organization dedicated to reducing postharvest food losses in developing countries and promoting the postharvest education (M.S., Ph.D.) of young student/scientists from developing countries. The foundation supports the mission of the World Food Preservation Center® LLC, a consortium of thirty major agricultural universities and three major research institutes on six continents. The World Food Preservation Education Foundation develops educational materials for advanced postharvest students in developing countries and supports continent-wide congresses on food security conducted by the World Food Preservation Center® LLC. In conjunction with CRC Press (Taylor & Francis), The World Food Preservation Education Foundation supports the publication of the World Food Preservation Center Book Series. The Center and the Foundation seek to avert future food shortages by supporting and innovating new and sustainable technologies to reduce widespread losses of food after harvest in developing countries. The World Food Preservation Education Foundation sees the lack of an adequate cold chain as a major contributor to postharvest food losses in developing countries. It is proposing the construction of "Solar Cold Chain Research Centers and Training Hubs" at 3 of the "sister" universities of the World Food Preservation Center® LLC in Ethiopia and 2 in Ghana. |
